Questions & Answers on appraisals.

There are many reasons an individual, institution or family may desire to seek a formal appraisal. Formal appraisals can be written for insurance, gifts, estates, the division of property, etc. The fact is, if you have a high dollar painting, sculpture or other antiquity, it provides peace of mind to have a formal appraisal done by an experienced professional appraiser.

With a formal appraisal, each item is described in detail with an accompanying photograph of the object. A cover letter is also provided in which we state the purpose of the appraisal, our understanding of its written requirements or dissociation with any conflict of interest (including a value contingent fee), and our certification that we have abided by the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisers Practice.

At Ponsford, our appraiser affiliate is one of the top appraisers in the United States. Paul Sternberg is certified in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice of the Appraisal Standards board, The Appraisal Foundation, and authorized by Congress as the source of appraisal standards and appraisal qualifications.
At his disposal are more than 10,000+ art and antique books, over 2,000 major auction catalogues, CD ROMs of over two million auctioned art objects, a database of more than 22,000 international artists and 35 years of experience of appraisal of fine art and antiquities. His experience and qualifications have enabled him to work with a variety of objects including many pieces that have been appraised at several million dollars.
